BACKGROUND
Onaga USD 322, also known as Onaga-Havensville-Wheaton USD 322, is a public unified school district headquartered in rural Onaga, Kansas. The school district operates a Senior High School/ Junior High School and Elementary School.
CHALLENGE
The Onaga School District needed to address their aging and outdated HVAC equipment. ESP’s team began by conducting a detailed analysis of the district’s needs and energy-saving opportunities. Utility analysis, site visits, and conversations with staff revealed that there were opportunities for substantially improving system efficiency and decreasing operating costs while enhancing comfort. Due to the inoperability of the existing inefficient boiler, the entire project needed to be completed prior to the heating season.
SOLUTION
The Onaga USD 322 Board of Education approved a comprehensive energy-saving performance contract. The project, completed on time and on budget, resulted in multiple energy conservation measures. Upgrades included new LED lighting with dimming capabilities, rooftop unit (RTU) replacements, a new condensing boiler, HVAC controls and a cost-competitive, reliable energy management system. The district worked closely with ESP and the local utility provider, Evergy, to take advantage of current energy savings incentives available in Kansas.
BENEFITS
The upgrades have created a better learning environment for the campus. The district received an incentive check for nearly $18,000 from Evergy. The project will also save the district over $69,000 annually on future utility/operating costs, allowing the district to use these savings to pay for the improvements over time, rather than turning to the community for additional tax support.
